Safe Passage/Camino Seguro is a not-for-profit organization working in Guatemala to empower the poorest at-risk children, whose families live in the Guatemala City garbage dump community, by creating opportunities and fostering dignity through the power of education. We are seeking an individual to teach music classes that foster hope, leadership skills, self-esteem and confidence.

Music Instructors are responsible for teaching classes in the Reinforcement Center that encourage students to explore how music can calm, inspire and energize. Classes with younger students will involve the use of percussion, movement and song and reinforce universal values to create a culture of peace. Older students will be given the opportunity to take music as an elective, with continued singing lessons and more advanced guitar or piano instruction. Music Instructors are challenged to create a safe space for expression and encourage students to discover their individual talents and aspirations through the creative process.

This position has a housing allowance available that is equivalent to local staff salary.

General Requirements:

• Intermediate / Advanced Spanish required
• Good disciplinary and organization skills
• Ability to work on a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team
• Flexibility, creative problem-solving skills
• Self-motivated and proactive
• Works well in a team environment
• Patient, personable and enthusiastic
• Experience playing at least one instrument required (Guitar required)
• Experience teaching and/or working with children preferred but enthusiastic beginners are welcome!
• Creativity and love for music!
