Safe Passage/Camino Seguro is a not-for profit organization working in Guatemala to empower the poorest at-risk children, whose families live in the Guatemala City garbage dump community, by creating opportunities and fostering dignity through the power of education.

 

The Tutoring Program focuses on working individually with students who have low skill sets in basic math, often who have fallen behind and need a little bit of special,  individualized attention. Students range from 6 years old (1st grade)-18 years old (High school).

 

Safe Passage seeks committed individuals who have experience connecting and  interacting with at-risk children and youth to be a part of this new program. Tutors will have a key role in helping the students build confidence in their own academic abilities, keeping them motivated with patience creativity and consistency.

 

Description:

-          Collaborate with other departments and Coordinator in creating schedule for students

-          Create and execute lesson plan for approximately 20 individual students per week to develop basic math skills

-          Evaluate students´ progress

-          Develop relationships with students, schools, parents, teachers and social workers

 

General Requirements:

-          Commitment to the mission, vision, values, principles and goals of Safe Passage

-          Advanced level of Spanish

-          Ability to teach classes of 1-3 students

-          Comfort teaching math skills

-          Organized, experience creating lesson plans preferred

-          Flexibility, creative problem-solving skills and a high level of commitment

-          Self-motivated and proactive

-          Patient, personable and enthusiastic

-          Strong work ethic

-          Sensitivity working with at-risk youth and families risk

-          Demonstrated ability to work with kids with behavioral and emotional problem preferred
