AMA is a non religious, not for profit organization providing integrated women's health services in two clinics, one in Ciudad Vieja, the other in zone 11 of the capital. Therefore our clientele are both rural and urban women of low resources.

Our philosophy is based on our respect for any woman, and the recognition of her right to integrated, affordable and educational care throughout her life cycle. We see young girls,as well as women of childbearing age and well into their menopausal years

We give gynecological care, prenatal care and education, attend natural births, and see women and their babies postpartum. Our goal is to empower women to claim their sexual and reproductive rights, though they are poor, though they may not have a lot of education, so they can take life into their own hands, decide when and how many children to have - if any and to help them with these tools on their way to economic independence. We also work in prevention of cervical cancer, and offer jornadas of pap smears as well as VIA/cryo procedures, and gynecological and obstetric ultrasounds. If needed, we are well connected and refer clients to related services, such as legal counseling, psychologists etc. Our staff, now consisting of 8 people, seven of which are women (except the guardian!) is mostly Guatemalan. Hannah Freiwald, the director and midwife of the project, is German but has lived and worked half of her life in Guatemala.

The project started in July of 2008 and has grown very fast, now, in August 2010, we are attending over 1500 women. We gladly accept volunteers, preferably midwives or midwifery students as well as alternative health care professionals. We do charge for the internship and write letters of recommendation.
